Bite correction

Abnormal bite (malocclusion) is impaired closure of teeth, lack of proper contact when chewing. This problem is often accompanied by bad aesthetics of the dentition. Therefore, patients usually come with a request for the alignment of the teeth, and not for correcting the bite.

If the patient says that he has the malocclusion, then in 95% he was told about this by a dentist or implantologist when the patient wanted to have a prosthetics. A very common situation when you need to put an implant, but the patient is refused, because: "With this bite, we can not install the implant."

Usually the abnormal bite is not noticed if the teeth in the smile zone are relatively even. But correcting the bite in time is important for future dental health.

How to identify the abnormal bite

When the bite is normal, the upper lateral teeth tightly interlock with the corresponding lower teeth; in front, the upper teeth cover the lower teeth by about a third. The middle line between the central incisors of the upper and lower dentitions coincides and runs in the middle of the oval face.

The main symptom of an abnormal bite is the lack of contact or loose closure of the teeth. You can understand that the bite is wrong by external signs: the asymmetry of the facial contours, protruding jaw, underdeveloped chin, gaps between the teeth. Improper standing teeth can injure the mucous membrane, complicate chewing and impair diction.

Unproportional lower jaw

Types of malocclusion:

  • Distal occlusion. The upper jaw is highly developed and protrudes, the lower jaw is underdeveloped.
  • Mesial occlusion. The lower jaw protrudes strongly.
  • Open bite. Part of the teeth, for example, incisors and canines, do not close at all. Considered one of the most difficult anomalies.
  • Deep bite. Upper teeth overlap lower teeth by more than half.
  • Crossbite. The jaw is underdeveloped on the one side, the upper and lower teeth are crossed.

The consequences of the malocclusion

Bite worries the patients at least. But what will happen if an adult does not treat uneven teeth? The bite is not corrected with age: the crowding of the teeth progresses, the teeth move and bend, affect the condition of the gums. As a result, orthodontic treatment may not be enough to solve all the problems encountered.

  1. Loss of teeth. Chewing loaded on the teeth is unevenly distributed - they are erased, bend and loosen the roots. After the loss of teeth is difficult to implant, because the place for the implant and the crowns are fallen "neighbors". The return of the chewing function and aesthetics in this case will require long-term treatment with an orthodontist, a surgeon and an orthopedist.
  2. Problems with gums. Periodont, a tissue that surrounds the root of a tooth and gum, suffers from an improper chewing load. Bending and shifting, the teeth leave a space between the tooth and the gum, into which bacteria enter and cause inflammation. The gum tissue decreases and exposes the root of the tooth. The result is periodontitis and tooth loss.
  3. Diseases of the digestive tract and ENT. . Incorrect teeth can not chew food, which is an additional burden on the gastrointestinal tract. Improper structure and location of the jaws causes otitis media, sinusitis and other diseases.
  4. Dysfunction of the temporomandibular joint. Squalid diseases of the TMJ greatly worsen state of health and difficult to treat. There is a headache, clicks and crunch when opening the mouth, spasms. Sometimes it is even difficult and painful to open your mouth.
  5. Injuries of the mucosa. ВыThe protruding teeth scratch the soft tissues of the oral cavity. In addition to discomfort and pain, micro-injuries cause inflammation and ulcers.
  6. Aesthetics and hygiene. The bite is responsible not only for the attractive smile, but also the harmony of the face. Untreated bite over the years will enhance the asymmetry of the face and the wrong profile line. Crowded and uneven teeth impair aesthetics and are harder to clean. The result of poor hygiene is dark plaque, bad breath, caries and gum disease.
  7. Early wrinkles. With the wrong bite, the chewing muscles get an uneven load - some constantly tense up, others stretch too much. These changes are reflected in the skin, which stretches and gathers in the folds. From constant irregular work, the joint is strained and worn out. The lower jaw drops and forms a second chin.

Ways to correct bite for adults

Bite correction is a long process, impossible without special orthodontic treatment. The older the patient, the longer it will take to level the teeth, as the tissues have already formed, and regeneration is slower.

Installing brackets

Classical orthodontic constructions cope with almost any bite anomalies. Modern brackets are convenient for the patient and the doctor, they can be transparent or completely invisible. Some systems are made individually and allow you to correct the bite rather quickly.

Removable caps and trainers

Transparent plastic caps - aligners, can correct simple anomalies of the bite and teeth. They need to be worn constantly, removing only while eating and brushing your teeth. About once a month the cap changes to a new one

Trainers are also transparent caps, but made of silicone. They differ from brackets and aligners in that they do not press on the teeth to correct them, but evenly distribute the chewing load. With serious pathologies trainers can not cope. Used mainly as an auxiliary technique to improve nasal breathing, swallowing and diction. Trainers need to be worn only at night and only a few hours during the day, but strictly at the same time.

Surgical correction of bite

A radical method of correcting complex anomalies that brackets can not cope with. It is usually used after maxillofacial injuries or with an open bite that prevents you from chewing and speaking normally.

Correction of bite and aesthetics

With proper orthodontic treatment, not only the bite, but also external defects of the teeth are corrected: curvatures, gaps, middle line. But it often happens that orthodontists focus on one thing and do not conduct the correct complex treatment. The orthodontist should be attentive to the patient's request, conduct a detailed diagnosis, draw up a treatment plan, while explaining his actions and decisions to the patient.

In cases where the bite is treated, but the teeth still look unattractive or missing, you should contact the orthopedist to install veneers or crowns.

To correct bite is not too late even in adulthood. The sooner you do this, the more problems you can avoid in the future. Orthodontic treatment will help you to save teeth healthy, restore aesthetics of a smile and harmony of facial features, gain self-confidence.
